Virginia Tech Incident - Could Bullying Be The Culprit?

Virginia Tech on the Blue Ridge Mountains

What has happenned at Virginia Tech today is most shocking and tragic. Almost eight years to the date that the Columbine massacre took place. I cannot begin to imagine the immense sorrow that shrouds the Virginia Tech campus this very moment.

Only last Sunday, I wrote about how bullying played a role in the lives of the Columbine gunmen - Klebold and Harris - in an article entitled Warning : Schools May Be Abetting Culture of Bullying which was published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer on April 15, 2007, I talked about how research had shown that the two gunmen had suffered immense torment from being bullied for so many years. The following day, yesterday, I read a Reader's Digest story about how a young man was shot by someone who had also experienced bullying for most of his life. I cannot help but wonder if the young man, apparently an Asian student who lived at the dorm where the massacre in Virginia Tech began, was himself, a victim of bullying.

Authorities are still at a loss and everyone is still in shock. In a few days, weeks perhaps, the motivation will hopefully revel itself. For now, let us just pray for the the 32 families whose lives are now forever changed by such a terrible tragedy.

yup!! it's the most horrifying thing ever!!! it's something you don't want to hear in the news. i can't get it out of my system, i need to blog about it as well!! i lost a brother to some random murder a while back & watching the news coverage on this massacre brings back memories. this morning on TV, there were some parents being interviewed. their only connection to the incident is that they have kids that currently attend Virginia Tech and when they were asked why they're weeping, they said, their kids haven't been answering their cellphones since yesterday morning. wouldn't that break your heart? very creepy!

Yes, it's so sad and like an international tragedy considering all the personalities involved. This is one case that I'm really reading about and following through. I can feel for all those who lost loved ones. Saw them on the news and they still all looked dazed and shell-shocked. Terrible.

Hi Cathy,

There's been much speculation as to the "Why" of the situation, and how this South Korean native could've taken the lives of so many individuals.

From reports here in the major media outlets, it looks like the gunman was very much mentally ill and/or disturbed even before the shootings.

recent reports say that the 2 hour gap between the first shooting and the second mass shooting, the gunman sent some letters and photos to NBC, which NBC in turn relayed to authorities.

Each and every interview of those who had contact with the gunman, show a person that was not connected with the world, who felt isolated, and had a troubled mind to begin with...

Right now, let us focus on the victims, and pray for all those affected, including even the shooter himself..

God Bless you Cathy, I hope you are doing well..

hi cathy,

we are still reeling from shock from the virginia tech shooting. i worry all the time about my kids who are vulnerable.

parang dito lang sa states nangyayari ang ganito. did you hear of the amish shooting recently? i can't understand bakit innocent and helpless students ang target when the gunman breaks down. it's just so unfair and makes us all feel paranoid.

Cathy,

New reports have come in regarding some interviews with Cho's high school classmates, and that he may have been picked on during those years.

we have been left reeling and confused, and also very paranoid about sending the kids off to their schools here.

bakit ganoon, innocent students ang hilig nila? do you remember the amish school shooting? it is very sad that this goes on here in the US.
